This is a special year for Sound Builders. We are celebrating thirty wonderful years of providing "The Remodeling Experience." Thank you so much for the opportunity to remodel your homes and touch your lives.

The owners of this 1970's vintage kitchen felt it was time for something bright and modern. The U-shaped configuration in essence trapped the owner in the kitchen. It cut them off from the social activities of the family room. It also made the flow of activity cumbersome.

The color selection and lighting package originally chosen for this kitchen made it a rather dark place to cook and socialize. The lighting fixtures were ineffective. In the kitchen direct lighting is needed to do a variety of tasks.

The flooring was something the owners really wanted to change. They wanted something that could be incorporated throughout the kitchen, dining area and hallways.

The owners did not want to lose counter or storage space the U-shaped configuration provided. At the same time they wanted something more user-friendly. Sound Builders helped design a kitchen around that wish.

The new layout allowed the installation of a large, multi-function island with cabinets for storage. This provides an open flow around the kitchen and the owner is no longer cut off from the activities of the family room. Having the island opposite the main counter is more efficient allowing the cook to turn and use the extra prep space instead of walking to another part of the kitchen.

The dark stained cabinets were replaced with European frameless cabinets with a slab door style for a clean, sleek look. For more efficient use of space, the soffit above the cabinets was removed, allowing the use of cabinets that reach to the ceiling. This allows more room to store those kitchen necessities. Two wood species and stains were incorporated into the cabinetry. The main body of the cabinets is maple with a neutral stain and it is accented by cherry with a rich dark stain. The choice of colors brightens the room immensely and creates a sophisticated look.

The lighting also contributes to the brightness and functionality of the kitchen. Recessed can lights above the counters and sink area and the custom "chandelier" pendant lights above the island highlight important task areas and add to the elegance of the room.

A strking contrast of color and material is achieved with the choices for the countertop and appliances. The granite countertop is a deep dark black with green color (Ocean Etoli) with an eased edge to give it a soft but bold look. The appliances are a combination of the very modern stainless steel and sleek black.

Hardwood was the answer to their flooring needs. Select Ash hardwood with a custom stain was laid throughout the kitchen, family room, dining room and hallways. This lent a cozy and inviting atmosphere that tied the project together.
